All in all, this was a pretty good book. It had its high points and low points. At some points there was action at every corner and at some points it seemed very repetitive. Also it seemed like it could have been longer. In the end, you don't know what happened to opium or the eejits. I would have also liked to see what happened to Chaco and Fidelito. And what happened to Maria? It seemed like thier relationship could have gone a little farther. All of these points will be covered in my review of the book House of the Scorpion, by Nancy Farmer.
For my first paragraph, I would like to start with the goods. Despite my complaints in the first paragraph, it was still one of the better books that I've read recently. I think the best part of this book was the characters and their description. I felt a lot of connection with a bunch of the characters, especially Tam Lin. Tam Lin was a terrible man before Matt came a long. He was a terrorist against england, and he accidentally blew up 20 kids. I think for almost getting himself killed to save Matts life kind of made up for his sins in a very small, small way. I also liked Matt, and how he would make the best of any situation. Near the beginning of the book, when Matt was trapped in the cellar for months, he treated it like a kingdom. He was interested in everything. He always had hope. The author also did a good job at defining the characters. The characters I was supposed to hate, like Tom and Felicia, I really did hate. These are some of the good points in the book.
Those were the goods, these are the bads. I had no major complaints about the story itself, or the writing, I would just liked there to have been more. The book could of either been longer, or have been more filled with stuff. There were times when I couldn't put the book down, but at certain points I was just waiting for it to get interesting again. When he went to go work at the plankton factory, It seemed like we were reading the same stuff for two chapters in a row. Also, I don't know if this was just me being slow, or if this was actually a thing for everyone, it seemed like the climax happened two or three times before it actually happened. The whole plot was occasionally hard to follow. And like I said before, what happened to all the relationships that Matt built? I would like to either see a sequel, or to have seen a longer book.
This was a pretty good book. It had its ups, its downs, its dry moments, and it moments that were filled with action. If I had to write a review for this book, on a scale from one(the least) to ten(the most), I would give it a seven and a half, because there were ups and downs, but the ups over powered the downs. Thats my review for my final post, thanks!
Things that are cool. While I was reading, I found a word that is really cool. That word is "eejit". It means a person with a computer chip in their brain, and they are not allowed to do anything unless they are told to. I think this is really wierd, because its like having zombies, because they used to be regular people who made their own decisions. A lot of them came from what used to be Mexico, and were brought there, when they were told they were going to America. Celia, who is Matts mother figure was going to be an eejit until El Patron told her otherwise.
The story The House of the Scorpion, by Nancy Farmer takes place in a country called Opium. Opium is located in between America and Mexico, which is now called Aztlan. The time period is placed in the future. Opium has a lot of poppy fields, which are used to make drugs. The temperature there is hot and humid. The place is run by a powerful drug lord, who created the country. He made a pact with the USA and Mexico to not sell them the drugs, but to other countries he would. Also, he would stop illegals from going to america.
